Drivers might feel confused by Missouri’s many vehicle-related laws. This is especially true for rules about car registration and the number and location of license plates. You may have noticed that many vehicles in Missouri don’t have a front license plate, but some do. So what does the law say?
If you’re unsure about how these laws apply to you, St. Louis car accident attorney can provide guidance and help you understand your rights.
Missouri Law Makes It Clear That Front Plates Are Required
Statute 301.130 RSMo specifies that the state will issue a “set” (a pair) of license plates after paying all necessary registration fees. The plates will display the state’s short name, the expiration date (month and year), a mix of letters and numbers, and the slogan, “The Show-Me State.” You can also choose a personalized license plate.
Section 5 (301.130.5) of that statute says no motor vehicle is operable on the roads unless both plates are clearly shown. The plates are also required to be visible at night.
Are There Exceptions To The Rule?
Section 5 (301.130.5) of that same statute does make exceptions to the rule. Trucks, buses, and tractor-trailers weighing over 12,000 pounds need just one license plate. However, drivers may still receive two plates when they register.
In this case, the back license plate is optional, while the front one isn’t. Regardless of size, any vehicle without a front license plate will be subject to a citation for failing to follow the law.
Why Do Missouri Residents Need Two License Plates?
Missouri is one of 31 states that require both a front and a back license plate for motor vehicles. This law mainly helps law enforcement, especially the Highway Patrol. They need to identify cars that are coming or going so they can easily capture those breaking the law.
What Happens If You Remove Your Front License Plate?
If you remove your front license plate or do not affix it properly to the front of your car, you could face stiff penalties.
According to the Missouri DMV, the fines for not affixing the front license plate to your vehicle total $30.50 as of this writing.
What Else Do You Need To Know About Missouri License Plates?
You need to consider other factors before registering your car in Missouri. These factors include:
- Year Tab: The color-coded year tab goes in the center of the license plate and indicates the year the registration expires.
- Temporary Third License Plate: If your car has a bicycle rack, a luggage rack, or a similar device that blocks the license plate, you’ll need a temporary third license plate.
- Missouri Made: Missouri license plates are made in the state by prisoners in the Missouri Department of Corrections at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.
Always check with the Department of Motor Vehicles to ensure you follow the most up-to-date license plate laws.
Avoid Citations — Follow The Law
You will receive two license plates when registering your vehicle, no matter what vehicle you drive. One plate is for the front, and the other is for the back of your car. Attach both plates to your vehicle in the right place to avoid a citation for missing a front license plate. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
